The most
commonly used material for making combs is plastic, although combs can also be
made out of wood, metal or cotton material. Concerns for the animals that
produced ivory and tortoiseshell reduced the usage of such materials that were
at one time very common.
Combs
vary in shape according to their function. Hairdressing combs may have close
teeth with a thin, tapered handle for parting hair. Common hair combs usually
have a combination of wider teeth half way and finer teeth for the rest of the
comb.
Hygiene
is a big factor in sharing combs as this is a common cause of infections
carried by parasites. An infected person can leave a comb with plenty of eggs
or even live parasites, facilitating the transmission of lice, fleas and other
such parasites.
